Extreme Service Rod Seal — Polypac High-Performance Hydraulic Seals
Extreme Service Rod Seal — Engineered Durability by Polypac
Polypac's Extreme Service Rod Seal category is designed for hydraulic systems that demand exceptional reliability in the harshest environments. Combining advanced filled-PTFE technology, High Quality elastomers, and precision molding, these rod seals minimize leakage, reduce friction, and extend cylinder life. Whether you're replacing OEM parts or specifying for new equipment, Polypac delivers performance-driven sealing solutions suited to heavy-duty mobile hydraulics, offshore rigs, mining machinery, and industrial presses.
Superior Materials and Construction
Polypac uses a broad portfolio of sealing materials—including bronze-, carbon-, graphite-, MoS2-, and glass-filled PTFE plus elastomers like NBR, FKM, EPDM, silicone, and FFKM—to match media, temperature and wear profiles. Our multi-component constructions and surface finishes are selected to optimize dynamic sealing, abrasion resistance, and low breakaway friction. Material selection and fill levels are tailored to balance conformability and extrusion resistance for extreme-service applications.
Engineered for Extreme Conditions
These rod seals are purpose-built for high-pressure, high-speed, and wide-temperature-range operation. The profiles control fluid film thickness and maintain sealing integrity under pressure spikes and rod misalignment. Compatibility spans mineral oils, synthetic fluids, water-glycols, and specialty media. Polypac designs emphasize reduced heat generation, stable frictional performance, and superior wear resistance to maximize uptime in continuous-duty installations.
Custom Solutions and Rigorous Testing
Polypac’s 10,000 m2 facility integrates advanced production lines and lab testing equipment to deliver custom rod seal geometries, compound developments, and rapid prototyping. We collaborate with universities and research institutes for material innovation and validate performance with endurance, abrasion, extrusion, and compatibility testing to meet client-specific service life targets.
Applications and Industry Use Cases
Ideal for construction and mining hydraulics, cranes, marine and offshore equipment, agricultural machinery, and industrial presses, Extreme Service Rod Seals protect critical actuators where failure is not an option. They reduce maintenance cycles and total cost of ownership through longer service intervals and fewer unscheduled shutdowns.
Why Choose Polypac
As an award-winning seal manufacturer, Polypac pairs scientific material expertise with scalable manufacturing. We offer reliable supply, custom formulations, engineering support, and strict quality control—making our Extreme Service Rod Seals the preferred choice for demanding sealing applications worldwide.

How important is surface finish on the metal parts that contact the seal?
Extremely important. A rough surface will abrade and wear out the seal quickly, causing leaks. A finish that is too smooth can prevent a lubricating film from forming. A typical recommended surface finish for dynamic applications is 0.2 to 0.8 μm (8-32 μin) Ra.
How can I prevent seal damage during installation?
Use Tools: Always use dedicated installation tools (e.g., picks, cones, guides). Lubricate: Always lubricate the seal and the contact surface. Protect Sharp Edges: Cover sharp threads and edges with tape or use an installation sleeve. Check the Groove: Ensure the installation groove is clean, deburred, and undamaged.
Can I reuse a seal?
We strongly recommend never reusing seals. Once compressed and used, a seal takes a "set" and its elastic properties are degraded. Reusing it almost always results in a leak. Always install a new seal during any maintenance or repair.
Why did my O-ring fail prematurely?
Common causes of O-ring failure include: Chemical Incompatibility: Swelling, softening, or cracking due to fluid exposure. Improper Sizing: Using an incorrect size leads to over-compression or inadequate sealing force. Abrasion: Wear and tear from rough surface finishes or contaminated fluid. Extrusion: The seal is forced into the gap between metal parts under high pressure. Installation Damage: Nicks, cuts, or twists during assembly.
What does "AS568" mean?
AS568 is the Aerospace Standard that defines the dimensions for over 360 standard O-ring sizes. It is the most widely accepted sizing system in North America and globally. An AS568 number (e.g., AS568-214) specifies a precise inside diameter and cross-section.
