Piston Seal with Backup Ring — Polypac Precision Sealing Solutions
Piston Seal with Backup Ring — Reliable, Low-Friction Hydraulic Sealing
Why Choose Polypac Piston Seal with Backup Ring?
Polypac's Piston Seal with Backup Ring combines dependable sealing performance with long service life for high-pressure hydraulic cylinders. Engineered to prevent extrusion and maintain low friction, these piston seals are ideal for demanding applications where leakage control and smooth motion are essential. With experience in both standard and bespoke designs, Polypac delivers solutions that balance sealing efficiency, wear resistance, and installation reliability.
Materials & Manufacturing Expertise
Founded in 2008 with roots in filled PTFE technology, Polypac manufactures piston seals using advanced materials including bronze-filled, carbon-filled, graphite PTFE, MoS₂-filled and glass-filled PTFE, plus elastomers such as NBR, FKM, silicone, EPDM and FFKM. Our 10,000+ m² facility and industry-leading production equipment ensure consistent dimensional accuracy and predictable material behavior across temperature and pressure ranges.
Performance in Extreme Conditions
Designed to resist extrusion and maintain seal integrity under high pressure, the Piston Seal with Backup Ring from Polypac excels in severe environments — high temperature, aggressive media, and dynamic loads. The backup ring supports the sealing lip to prevent deformation, extending operational life and reducing maintenance intervals for hydraulic systems in construction, agriculture, mobile equipment, and industrial hydraulics.
Customization & Quality Assurance
Polypac offers tailored piston seals and backup rings to meet OEM tolerances and application-specific requirements. We perform rigorous testing and maintain collaborative R&D ties with universities and research institutes to validate material formulations and testing protocols. QC measures include dimensional inspection, hardness testing, and performance validation under simulated working conditions.
Applications & Support
Our Piston Seal with Backup Ring is specified across hydraulics, oil & gas, heavy machinery and rail systems. Polypac provides technical selection support, rapid prototyping, and scalable production for both small runs and large OEM programs. Contact Polypac for samples, CAD drawings, and application engineering to optimize seal performance and life cycle cost.

What is the purpose of the metal spring in a rotary shaft seal?
The garter spring in a shaft seal (e.g., FSKR, SPGO types) provides a constant radial force on the sealing lip. This ensures consistent contact with the rotating shaft, compensating for minor wear, eccentricity, and vibration to prevent lubricant leakage.
When should I use a spring-energized seal instead of a standard elastomeric seal?
Consider a spring-energized seal (e.g., GSF, SPN types) for demanding applications involving: Extreme Temperatures (below -30°C or above +200°C) Aggressive Chemicals that elastomers can't handle Very Low Leakage or "Zero Leakage" requirements Poor Lubricity or dry running conditions The internal spring maintains constant sealing force, compensating for wear and system variables.
How can I prevent seal damage during installation?
Use Tools: Always use dedicated installation tools (e.g., picks, cones, guides). Lubricate: Always lubricate the seal and the contact surface. Protect Sharp Edges: Cover sharp threads and edges with tape or use an installation sleeve. Check the Groove: Ensure the installation groove is clean, deburred, and undamaged.
What is the difference between NBR and FKM materials?
NBR (Nitrile/Buna-N): A general-purpose, cost-effective material with excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels. It has a standard temperature range of -30°C to +100°C (-22°F to +212°F). FKM (Fluoroelastomer/Viton®): A premium material with excellent resistance to high temperatures (up to 200°C+), chemicals, and oils. It is used in more severe environments but is more expensive than NBR.
How do I choose the right material for my sealing application?
Material selection depends on four key factors: Media: What fluid or gas will the seal contact? (e.g., petroleum oil, water, chemicals, steam) Temperature: What is the minimum and maximum operating temperature? Pressure: What is the system's operating pressure? Are there pressure spikes? Application: Is it a static, dynamic, or rotary seal? Example: NBR (Buna-N) is excellent for standard hydraulic oil, while FKM (Viton®) is needed for high temperatures or aggressive chemicals.
