POM Backup Ring - High-Performance Sealing Solutions by Polypac
POM Backup Ring — Reliable Support for High-Pressure Seals
Polypac POM Backup Rings are engineered to enhance the performance and longevity of O-rings in hydraulic and oil seal systems. Manufactured from High Quality POM (polyoxymethylene), these backup rings resist extrusion, reduce friction, and maintain dimensional stability across varied temperatures and pressures.
Key Benefits
Our POM Backup Rings provide excellent wear resistance and low moisture absorption, ensuring consistent sealing performance in dynamic and static applications. With high compressive strength and chemical compatibility, they protect soft elastomers (NBR, FKM, silicone, EPDM, FFKM) from extrusion under extreme conditions.
Applications
Designed for hydraulic cylinders, valves, pumps, and rotating shafts, POM Backup Rings are ideal for industries requiring strict reliability—construction, mobile hydraulics, oil & gas, and industrial machinery. Polypac offers standard sizes and custom configurations to meet OEM specifications and retrofit needs.
Precision Manufacturing & Quality
Produced in our 10,000+ m² facility with state-of-the-art production and testing equipment, each POM Backup Ring undergoes rigorous dimensional and material testing. Polypac’s long-term collaborations with universities and research institutions ensure continuous material optimization and process improvements.
Customization & Materials Expertise
Whether you require single-run prototypes or large-volume production, Polypac customizes backup ring geometries, tolerances, and surface finishes. We combine expertise from our origins in filled PTFE seals and our expanded elastomer portfolio to deliver integrated sealing solutions tailored to special working conditions.

How do I choose the right material for my sealing application?
Material selection depends on four key factors: Media: What fluid or gas will the seal contact? (e.g., petroleum oil, water, chemicals, steam) Temperature: What is the minimum and maximum operating temperature? Pressure: What is the system's operating pressure? Are there pressure spikes? Application: Is it a static, dynamic, or rotary seal? Example: NBR (Buna-N) is excellent for standard hydraulic oil, while FKM (Viton®) is needed for high temperatures or aggressive chemicals.
Can I reuse a seal?
We strongly recommend never reusing seals. Once compressed and used, a seal takes a "set" and its elastic properties are degraded. Reusing it almost always results in a leak. Always install a new seal during any maintenance or repair.
How important is surface finish on the metal parts that contact the seal?
Extremely important. A rough surface will abrade and wear out the seal quickly, causing leaks. A finish that is too smooth can prevent a lubricating film from forming. A typical recommended surface finish for dynamic applications is 0.2 to 0.8 μm (8-32 μin) Ra.
When should I use a spring-energized seal instead of a standard elastomeric seal?
Consider a spring-energized seal (e.g., GSF, SPN types) for demanding applications involving: Extreme Temperatures (below -30°C or above +200°C) Aggressive Chemicals that elastomers can't handle Very Low Leakage or "Zero Leakage" requirements Poor Lubricity or dry running conditions The internal spring maintains constant sealing force, compensating for wear and system variables.
