Rod seals for hydraulic cylinders — Polypac Precision Seals
Rod seals for hydraulic cylinders — Polypac
Reliable sealing performance
Polypac rod seals for hydraulic cylinders deliver leak-free operation and extended service life across mobile and industrial hydraulics. Designed to prevent pressure bypass and contamination ingress, our rod seals maintain sealing integrity under high speed, heavy load, and variable pressure cycles.
Advanced materials & manufacturing
With roots in filled PTFE technology, Polypac combines bronze-, carbon-, graphite-, MoS₂-, and glass-filled PTFE with elastomers such as NBR, FKM, EPDM, silicone and FFKM to meet diverse media and temperature demands. Our 10,000 m² facility and industry-leading production and testing equipment ensure consistent tolerances and material performance for every batch.
Custom solutions for special working conditions
From extreme temperatures to chemically aggressive fluids and high-speed rods, Polypac provides tailored rod seals for hydraulic cylinders. We collaborate with universities and research institutes to develop compound formulations and seal profiles that solve unique application challenges—reducing downtime and lifecycle costs.
Quality control and certification
Every rod seal for hydraulic cylinders undergoes strict dimensional inspection, material analysis and functional testing. Our manufacturing processes comply with international quality standards to guarantee durability, low friction and consistent sealing under cyclical loads.
Applications & benefits
Ideal for construction equipment, agricultural machinery, industrial presses and offshore hydraulics, Polypac rod seals improve efficiency and reliability. Benefits include reduced leakage, lower maintenance frequency, improved energy efficiency, and compatibility with bespoke sealing systems including O-rings and backup rings.

How do I choose the right material for my sealing application?
Material selection depends on four key factors: Media: What fluid or gas will the seal contact? (e.g., petroleum oil, water, chemicals, steam) Temperature: What is the minimum and maximum operating temperature? Pressure: What is the system's operating pressure? Are there pressure spikes? Application: Is it a static, dynamic, or rotary seal? Example: NBR (Buna-N) is excellent for standard hydraulic oil, while FKM (Viton®) is needed for high temperatures or aggressive chemicals.
What is the difference between NBR and FKM materials?
NBR (Nitrile/Buna-N): A general-purpose, cost-effective material with excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels. It has a standard temperature range of -30°C to +100°C (-22°F to +212°F). FKM (Fluoroelastomer/Viton®): A premium material with excellent resistance to high temperatures (up to 200°C+), chemicals, and oils. It is used in more severe environments but is more expensive than NBR.
How can I prevent seal damage during installation?
Use Tools: Always use dedicated installation tools (e.g., picks, cones, guides). Lubricate: Always lubricate the seal and the contact surface. Protect Sharp Edges: Cover sharp threads and edges with tape or use an installation sleeve. Check the Groove: Ensure the installation groove is clean, deburred, and undamaged.
When should I use a spring-energized seal instead of a standard elastomeric seal?
Consider a spring-energized seal (e.g., GSF, SPN types) for demanding applications involving: Extreme Temperatures (below -30°C or above +200°C) Aggressive Chemicals that elastomers can't handle Very Low Leakage or "Zero Leakage" requirements Poor Lubricity or dry running conditions The internal spring maintains constant sealing force, compensating for wear and system variables.
