PTFE Backup Rings — High-Performance Seal Support by Polypac
PTFE Backup Rings by Polypac — Reliable Seal Reinforcement
High Quality backup rings designed for demanding environments
Polypac's PTFE Backup Rings are engineered to prevent extrusion, extend seal life and reduce friction in hydraulic and oil sealing systems. Manufactured from filled PTFE compounds (bronze, carbon, graphite, MoS₂, glass), our backup rings offer superior chemical resistance, low wear and high dimensional stability under pressure and temperature swings. Ideal for dynamic and static applications, PTFE Backup Rings maintain seal geometry where elastomers alone would fail.
Applications & advantages
Used across hydraulic cylinders, valves, compressors and rotating shafts, Polypac PTFE Backup Rings support O-rings and other soft seals to prevent seal extrusion at high pressures and tight clearances. Benefits include low friction, excellent compatibility with hydraulic fluids, extended service intervals, and minimized downtime. These properties make PTFE Backup Rings a go-to choice for heavy industry, mobile hydraulics and oilfield equipment.
Materials & customization
With origins in filled PTFE production since 2008, Polypac delivers backup rings in a wide range of material formulations to match specific operating conditions. Choose bronze-filled for enhanced wear resistance, carbon-filled for thermal stability, graphite or MoS₂-filled for lubricity, or glass-filled for structural stiffness. We also provide dimensional customization, tight tolerances, and combined solutions with NBR, FKM, silicone, EPDM and FFKM O-rings to meet complex sealing demands.
Manufacturing, testing & quality assurance
Polypac’s 10,000+ m² facility and advanced production/testing equipment ensure consistent quality and performance. Our R&D collaborations with universities and research institutes support materials development and accelerated life testing. Every batch of PTFE Backup Rings undergoes dimensional inspection, hardness and compound verification, and performance validation to meet industry standards.

Can I reuse a seal?
We strongly recommend never reusing seals. Once compressed and used, a seal takes a "set" and its elastic properties are degraded. Reusing it almost always results in a leak. Always install a new seal during any maintenance or repair.
How do I choose the right material for my sealing application?
Material selection depends on four key factors: Media: What fluid or gas will the seal contact? (e.g., petroleum oil, water, chemicals, steam) Temperature: What is the minimum and maximum operating temperature? Pressure: What is the system's operating pressure? Are there pressure spikes? Application: Is it a static, dynamic, or rotary seal? Example: NBR (Buna-N) is excellent for standard hydraulic oil, while FKM (Viton®) is needed for high temperatures or aggressive chemicals.
What is the difference between a static seal and a dynamic seal?
A Static Seal is used between two surfaces that do not move relative to each other (e.g., pipe flanges, end caps). O-rings and gaskets are common static seals. A Dynamic Seal is used between surfaces that do move (e.g., piston and cylinder, rotating shaft). Rod seals, piston seals, and rotary shaft seals are designed for this purpose.
Why did my O-ring fail prematurely?
Common causes of O-ring failure include: Chemical Incompatibility: Swelling, softening, or cracking due to fluid exposure. Improper Sizing: Using an incorrect size leads to over-compression or inadequate sealing force. Abrasion: Wear and tear from rough surface finishes or contaminated fluid. Extrusion: The seal is forced into the gap between metal parts under high pressure. Installation Damage: Nicks, cuts, or twists during assembly.
What is the purpose of the metal spring in a rotary shaft seal?
The garter spring in a shaft seal (e.g., FSKR, SPGO types) provides a constant radial force on the sealing lip. This ensures consistent contact with the rotating shaft, compensating for minor wear, eccentricity, and vibration to prevent lubricant leakage.
